ARNOLD DREYBLATT w/ members of New Music Co-op

In 2006, for the first time ever, SXSW has devoted a showcase to a prominent experimental music label. On March 16th, a fantastic lineup of artists on the TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS label performed an evening length program of experimental music. As part of the presentation, composer/performer Arnold Dreyblatt performed alongside Austin New Music Co-op members Steve Bernal (cello), Brent Fariss (prepared contrabass), Nick Hennies (drumset), and Travis Weller (violin). During a three decade career, Dreyblatt has developed a distinctive -- and delightfully engaging -- approach to composition and performance. Employing modified and invented instruments and a unique tuning system, his music is a vigorously rhythmic and richly textured romp through the natural overtone series, one that emphasizes dynamics and sonorities to stunning acoustical effect. For this event he composed a new piece and specially prepared two double basses by stringing them with piano wire to create a dramatically different sonic effect.
